Diablo 2: Resurrected is here, and many players — new and old — are no doubt gearing up to take on the demons of Sanctuary. Diablo 2 is more than 20 years old at this point, and there are plenty of great beginner’s tips and tricks that will get you acquainted with or reaccustomed to the remastered legendary game. Here they are in no particular order.
1. Focus your build
Diablo 2: Resurrected isn’t like Diablo 3 in the sense that you can re-spec and re-skill characters as many times as you want. In fact, before Akara awarded a stat and skill reset reward for the Den of Evil questline and before Tokens of Absolution were introduced, there was no way to remake a character other than to start again at level one.
With the three difficulty levels — Normal, Nightmare, and Hell — you get three stat and skill resets from Akara for free. Tokens of Absolution are made by combining special essences received when killing bosses in Hell difficulty, making them rare and expensive. For this reason, you want to be careful when choosing skills for your character.
Each character has three different skill trees, and while you can mix and match skills all you want, the best builds are generally as focused as possible. For example, if you’re playing as a Sorceress, you will likely want to choose either cold, fire, or lightning rather than a mixture of all three. Especially in the early game, mixing skill trees can lead to an underpowered character that struggles with bosses.
2. Maximize your Vitality attribute
Diablo 2: Resurrected gives characters four different stat pools, known as attributes: strength, dexterity, vitality, and energy. You receive five attribute points each time you level up (as well as some from quests) so they are relatively rare. While all attributes are important, Vitality is the one you generally want to maximize. A huge life pool is the mainstay of most Diablo 2 builds, with some exceptions for Sorceresses going with an Energy Shield build.
The equipment and weapons you use requires strength and dexterity to equip, so be sure you have enough of both for your best gear. Dexterity also plays into the block stat; if you’d like to maximize your block chance, save enough points. Otherwise, all attribute points should go into Vitality.
3. Maximize resistances

Your character’s resistances to Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Poison are what will keep you alive when you move into Nightmare and Hell difficulties. Characters start Normal difficulty with no resistances, but they can be gained through equipment and certain quests. For the latter, be sure to rescue Anya in Act Five.
You can check your resistances on the main character screen, just below your stats. If you have, say, 15 poison resistance, your character will see a 15% reduction from any poison elemental attack.
Don’t get too comfortable with resistances in Normal difficulty, as the base numbers take a deep dive once you hit the harder difficulties. You’ll see a -40 penalty in Nightmare, and a -100 penalty in Hell. That means in the endgame you’ll need somewhere around +175 to all resistances to have maximum protection.
Prioritize gear that offers resistances, and be sure to keep a look out for charms of the same nature.
4. Run normal Countess for runes
Diablo 2 doesn’t really have an endgame, but the nature of its procedurally generated levels and respawning enemies means you can run the same bosses over and over in search of loot. In the early game, Act One’s Black Marsh is home to the Countess who commonly drops runes useful for crafting gear that can carry you through to at least the end of Normal difficulty.
Look for Tal and Eth runes to create the Stealth runeword for body armor. It provides poison resistance, faster run/walk, faster cast rate, faster hit recovery, and more.
Shael and Eth go into shields to create the Rhyme runeword, with better block rate, 25% to all resistances, and a boost to magic find.
Leaf is a fantastic runeword for Sorceresses. Tir and Ral runes go into a stave for a huge boost to fire skills and cold resistance.
5. Find and use waypoints for fast travel
The game’s Acts are split into regions, and most regions have their own waypoint that can be used for fast travel. However, you must discover and activate the waypoint in the wild before it can be accessed from the Act’s main town.
For example, if you’re planning on running the Countess multiple times, you will want to find the waypoint in the Act One Black Marsh. This will allow you to bypass the first few regions and will make your repeated trips much quicker. You can fast travel to the Black Marsh waypoint, kill the Countess in her tower, then exit the game to repeat the process.
Waypoints are static spots that will always appear in a certain region. Don’t confuse them with Town Portals, which are user-created portals that expire once they’re used or the game is exited back to the main menu.
6. Fill your bag with potions early on
During the early game, health potions are generally plentiful. You should find many from downed enemies and in chests around the world. Mana potions, on the other hand, are much harder to find and you’ll likely have to visit vendors to buy them. Any time you visit town, be sure to stock up.
Stamina plays a heavy role as well, but only for the first few hours of the game until you level up and find better gear. For this reason, though, you’ll also want to bring along a bunch of stamina potions. They can be stacked, which means you can drink three or four at once and have them work one after the other instead of all being used at once.
Antidote potions might be important in the late game, as some advanced enemies have nasty poison attacks that last until you’re drained of life. Consider these when taking on bosses. Similarly, be sure to bring some thawing potions when facing Duriel.
7. Upgrade your belt ASAP
You begin the game without any special gear, and one of the first items you should look out for is a belt. Basic belts will expand your potion slots by four, while advanced belts expand slots by up to 12 for a total of 16. Even a basic belt doubles your available space, which will reduce the amount of the time you spend moving potions from your bag to the belt hotbar.
8. Hire and equip a mercenary to help with fights
Mercenaries are available to hire in the starting area of all acts. Killing Blood Raven in the first act quest will get you a Rogue archer for free, which can be equipped with corresponding gear. This is important, as mercenaries are relatively weak without armor and weapons. Any mercenaries you hire in the future will cancel your current mercenary, and any gear they’re wearing will also be gone forever. Be sure to take back your gear before swapping mercenaries.
The meta-game generally leans heavily on Act Two mercenaries because of their aura abilities and weapon class being polearms. One of the best starting runewords that you can equip on a mercenary is Insight, which uses Ral, Tir, Tal, and Sol runes. This provides the mercenary (and you) with a Meditation aura which quickly regenerates mana. Combined with something like a Defiance aura, you can get quick mana regen and extra defense without much effort.
9. Hold onto runes and gems
Runes changed Diablo 2 greatly when they were introduced. They can be used to create some of the most powerful items in the game — runewords — but they’re also widely used as in-game currency. Unless you somehow have an enormous surplus of runeword, you should hold onto as many as possible. Even low runes can be combined together in the Horadric Cube to “cube up, ” giving you a higher rune.
Gems are also quite important, both for adding special abilities to socketed items and for crafting recipes. Like runes, low-quality gems can be upgraded in the Horadric Cube, so you might want to hold onto as many as possible. You might even find people trading mid-high runes for a certain amount of perfect gems once the season’s economy gets going.
10. Sell yellow (rare) gear for big bucks
Gold is always important in Diablo 2: Resurrected. You’ll need it to buy potions, portals, and ID scrolls at the start of the game, and you’ll need it to resurrect your mercenary in the late game. Dying also causes you to lose a bunch of gold, so a tough boss fight can leave you poor.
The best way to amass gold is to pick up yellow (rare) items, identify them, and sell them to merchants. A lot of the time you’ll be able to get the maximum amount of gold in return. Side note: be sure to deposit your gold in your personal stash to prevent other players from stealing it when you die.
11. Keep gear with +Skill stats
While you receive skill points when you level up or complete certain quests, the next best way to get a boost to your skills is via gear. It is rare, but anything you find that boosts your preferred skills should be prioritized (at least unless it causes you to be a lot weaker). The best gear with +Skills will be legendary (gold/brown), and runewords, though rare (yellow) items can also roll with some excellent stats.
Thanks to the shared stash now in Diablo 2: Resurrected, it’s much easier to swap gear between your characters. And since Diablo 2 drops random gear that doesn’t necessarily pertain to your current character, be sure to watch out for gear that works with your other characters.
12. Use the Horadric Cube for extra inventory space
The Horadric Cube, gained through an Act Two quest, is one of the most powerful tools in the game. Not only does it help you move through the game in multiple areas, but it’s also used for crafting, combining gems and runes, and more.
The Horadric Cube takes up four spaces in your inventory, but when opened it provides 12 spaces. For this reason, many people keep the cube in their main bag to hold larger items. This becomes more important as your inventory fills up with charms.
13. Open a Town Portal before facing a boss
A death in Diablo 2: Resurrected sends you back to the starting area of the Act without any of your gear. It’s up to you to navigate back to your dead body, which when clicked will re-equip all of your gear and will move everything back into your inventory. Or, if you can’t make it back, you can exit the game to move your body back to town. This will, however, reset the map and monsters.
When going into a boss battle, open a nearby Town Portal that won’t be swarmed by enemies. This will allow you to quickly travel back to your body should you die, making the task a whole lot easier.
And if you’re playing Hardcore and die, have fun starting a new character.
14. Play with a squad
Diablo’s minions grow stronger as more players join, but having a group of people playing is the best way to go. You’ll be able to move through the game at a much faster pace, and you’ll be able to pull back and heal without as much worry about being swarmed by enemies. While most character builds focus on maximum damage with maximum survivability, there’s no reason you can’t work with some supporting skills to boost your party, especially in the early game.
Just know that loot is shared in Diablo 2: Resurrected, so be ready to grab any high-end items that drop. Otherwise, you’ll have to ask nicely or trade.
15. Be wary of scams and bogus trades
Diablo 2: Resurrected is undoubtedly going to be filled with many veterans who are happy to help newcomers with gear and leveling. However, there are also plenty of people who want to take advantage of other players any way possible. Here are a few tips to be sure you don’t get scammed or cheated.
Always check items in the trade window before agreeing to a trade. Some people will swap out legendary items with low-end items that look the same, hoping people don’t check the stat screen.
Don’t ever drop items on the ground in the hopes that someone will “dupe” it for you. They will pick up the item and disappear.
And don’t ever download any third-party software that can “help” the game in any way. It’s likely going to cause you to lose your gear in some way.

It’s been over 20 years since Diablo 2 launched, so it’s completely understandable if you don’t remember every little detail about the RPG game. Though Blizzard has done a great job remaking Diablo 2, there are certain aspects of the game that haven’t stood the test of time. Who might’ve guessed that a game named after the devil could be so unforgiving?
It’s easy to spend your valuable skill points only to discover halfway through the game that you’ve created a terrible build. There are important mechanics you should consider before venturing off into battle, like the fact you can only respec your character a limited number of times per playthrough. Whether you’re a returning Diablo player looking for a quick refresher, or you’re a complete newcomer to the series, these tips should be helpful at the start of the game. We’ll have you ready to send Diablo and his minions back to Hell before you get the chance to pick a Diablo 2 class.
Useful shortcuts
Outside of combat, you’ll spend a lot of time in Diablo 2’s inventory menus. You can speed up the selling process with the new quality of life tweak that allows you to instantly sell an item at a store. Control and left click on any item in your inventory to sell it to a merchant. You can save plenty of time with this handy little shortcut, sparing you minutes each time you finish battling demons.
There’s another merchant-related shortcut you can use to purchase multiple items in one click. Shift and right click allows you to purchase a stack of items. This is handy when purchasing scrolls for your tomes as it allows you to buy 20 scrolls in a single click. You can also add items directly to your belt by pressing shift and left click.
Finally, use alt to display all of the items dropped on the floor. This is crucial as it allows you to see every item on the screen, giving you the freedom to be more selective about what you pick up. At the beginning of the game, most players pick up any old trash as they can sell it on, but this slows down drastically once you start to find better loot.
Purchase tomEs right away
The scrolls of identify and town portal are going to be two of your most used items in Diablo 2, right next to potions. Once you unlock access to the vendor in Act 1, purchase a tome of identity and town portal right away. These tomes allow you to store up to 20 scrolls in each vessel, saving you plenty of inventory space. The tomes should become a mainstay of your inventory throughout the game, likely occupying the same space from beginning to end.
Don’t forget about your mercenary
Diablo 2 doesn’t spend much time highlighting what mercenaries are and how they can be used effectively. In almost every act, there are mercenaries that can fight alongside you for a price. In Act 1, Kashya rewards you with a Rogue mercenary after completing the Blood Raven quest. Mercenaries fight with you until they die, and they can die pretty quickly if you aren’t paying attention to them.
While this may sound like a burden, mercenaries can be extremely useful, especially for solo players who might need a helping hand. You can equip mercenaries with the same type of equipment and weapons you might use. Improving your mercenary’s gear is the easiest way to improve their survivability – if you want your AI companion to tank damage for you, you’re going to need to share your loot. You can even give your mercenary potions directly from your belt by holding shift and pressing the corresponding hotkey.
Spend your skill points carefully
The devs implemented a number of important quality of life changes to Diablo 2 Resurrected, but the ability to respec at will isn’t one of them. That’s right, if you want to respec your character, you only have one opportunity to do so throughout the entire game. After completing the Den of Evil quest in Act 1, Akara gives you an opportunity to reset all of your skills. This opportunity occurs once per difficulty.
It’s important that you spend your skill and stat points wisely as you can only fix your mistakes once. It’s worth following a build guide to ensure you aren’t wasting any of your precious points. Diablo 2 Resurrected lets you take your character to a higher difficulty, but you won’t survive if your points have made you too weak to fight against the monsters.
There’s an alternative method that allows you to respec at will, but it requires you to reach the endgame content on Hell difficulty. This involves defeating each boss across all five acts – chances are if you’ve made it this far, your build can’t be that bad.
Feel free to experiment with your class
Okay, so you know how we just said you should spend your skill points carefully? If you’re only planning on playing through the game once on Normal difficulty, don’t be afraid to experiment with your build. Diablo 2’s starter difficulty doesn’t require you to create the most optimal build – you can get away with wasting some points if you want to try something new.
We don’t think it’s possible to create a build so bad that you can’t complete the game on normal, however, this is definitely something you can do on Nightmare and Hell. Use Normal as a playground for your creativity, but if you decide to kick the difficulty up a level, it might be a good idea to follow a build guide instead.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is now available on PC and consoles, and it brings the classic action-RPG to modern platforms–the consoles being the most notable of the bunch, given the original was only ever available on PC. And while it has gotten a visual overhaul and some other quality-of-life improvements, it’s a largely faithful remake of a two-decade-old game. As such, you can expect it to generally be less friendly to players than Diablo 3–if that’s your only exposure to the series thus far, prepare for Resurrected to tell you a whole lot less, kick your teeth in, and then make you walk–not run–away because you’ve run out of rtunately, this being largely faithful means there are plenty of existing resources to help guide you through the many complex elements of Diablo 2, be it the complexities of the Horadric Cube, Runewords, or character builds. Here, we’re taking a look at some essential tips that will help ease you into the world of Diablo 2 based on our experience with the original game and time spent with Resurrected so far–it should be useful whether you’re a first-time player or someone who just hasn’t picked up the game in years and forgot all about the joys of Scrolls of Identify, Baal runs, and those damn cows.

Aside from a brief description, you’re left to make your choice largely based on the look of each class. While you can always roll additional new characters, there’s no swapping classes once you make your choice, so any time you sink into a character will be for naught if you decide you’d actually rather play something else. (You can, thankfully, make use of the new shared loot box to move items between characters–no more starting a session, dropping everything you own in town, exiting, and then returning with another character to move items. )Some classes are better-suited for newcomers than others; Sorceress is heavily dependent on spellcasting and mana, as you’d imagine, and is relatively frail, making it a more challenging character to play solo at the start (although her teleport ability is a real life-saver once you get it). On the other hand, Paladins can take more of a hit and can heal without potions, while Necromancers can summon an army of minions who will not only dish out damage, but more importantly, distract and absorb enemy attacks, helping to keep you a pure entertainment perspective, this is an entirely subjective choice, though there’s a reason Barbarian was the one returning character in Diablo 3 at launch–Blizzard thought there was real room for improvement with that one. The limited amount of information on the character creation screen doesn’t allude to this, but there are numerous class builds and radically different ways of playing as any a given a plan with your class and stick to itThat wide range of possibilities means each class can function quite differently depending on your choices. With the aforementioned Necromancer, you might focus entirely on summoning an army of minions, or you might opt for a build that invests points in poison/bone spells, letting you deal damage more directly. Assassins can focus on traps they summon or martial arts skills. Druids can be shapeshifters or rely on elemental attacks. Depending on the class, you can also center your entire build around a single skill, as with Zeal Paladins or Blessed Hammer Paladins, who are also known in the community as your attribute points wisely, tooWhile you’re free to mix and match skills as you wish, it’s generally best to make a plan and invest accordingly. You have a limited number of skill points to allot, meaning you won’t be able to acquire everything in the skill tree. And even if you do invest heavily in a particular skill, that may dictate what other skills you should choose due to skill synergies, which you can see listed when hovering over a skill. For instance, the basic Raise Skeleton skill for Necromancers gets a bonus from Skeleton Mastery and Summon Resist, making those important skills for a summoner to surrected features a respec system, so you aren’t entirely locked into the choices you make, but there are limitations on it (you’ll earn some respec opportunities for free as you play, while subsequent ones require gathering certain resources). As a result, don’t plan on being able to freely experiment to the same degree that you can in Diablo mindful of your staminaOne gameplay mechanic that might catch you off-guard is stamina. Essentially, you can only sprint for a limited period of time before running out of energy and being forced to walk. You can toggle between running and walking on your own to preserve stamina and ensure you aren’t left on empty if you suddenly need to put some distance between you and an enemy. Stamina potions can help in this situation, and some items (as well as the Vitality stat) will provide you with a boost as well, but it’s something you should always keep an eye on along with your health and mana, particularly if you’re playing solo. There’s nothing worse than being unable to escape a fight because you were running around needlessly a moment prior and left without stamina when you most needed is serious businessAlong the lines of the stamina system, if you’re someone who has only played Diablo 3, there are some habits you may need to break or changes you’ll need to become accustomed to. There are the more immediate things you may notice, such as the lack of a combat roll (an addition to Diablo 3 when it was ported to consoles) that will shift how you approach fights. But the first time you die, you might be surprised to find that you’ll respawn back in town–sans order to recover your loot, you’ll need to make your way back to your corpse and pick it up. Without any armor, you’ll be extremely vulnerable, so keeping backup items in your stash for these cases is a smart move, though be aware that you’ll need room in your inventory to pick up your previous items. If you’re venturing into a tough fight, it’s also wise to open a town portal before starting, which will save you the frustrating walk all the way back to where you died. Luckily, if you do die again before recovering your corpse, you’ll just drop additional corpses; this isn’t a case where you have only a single chance to get your gear back. You can also save yourself some potential trouble by storing gold in your stash, ensuring you won’t need to recover your corpse to get it exception to all of this is Hardcore mode, where a single death spells the end–all of your progress is lost upon ioritize your targetsPlayers aren’t the only ones who can be revived in Diablo 2. Particularly if you’re playing with a controller, it can be easy to default to attacking whatever is closest to you. That might work much of the time, but you should be mindful of fights with enemies who can resurrect their allies. You’ll encounter this in the game’s first quest, when you explore the Den of Evil. There you’ll find Fallen Shaman units who will bring foes you’ve slain back to life–and they’ll keep doing this for as long as they’re still standing. That means you should ensure you hunt down the Shaman first. This is also a lesson in paying attention to the enemy attributes displayed at the top of the screen; you’ll see the Fallen Shaman is listed with “raises Fallen, ” and throughout the game you’ll encounter other enemies that should be prioritized ahead of lesser a Tome of Town Portal and Tome of Identify earlyDiablo 2 Resurrected’s inventory screen and shared stash spaceAmong the items available from the NPC Akara (your first quest-giver) are two tomes: one for Scrolls of Town Portal, and another for Scrolls of Identify. These scrolls are highly useful, as the former let you quickly visit town and then return to the action, while the latter reveal hidden attributes on items (which must be done before they can be equipped). You’ll likely always want to have some of these scrolls on you, but they each take up one square in your inventory. These tomes take up just two squares each but can hold up to 20 of their respective scrolls. Managing your inventory is essential, and you’ll be glad to save space with these tomes as scrolls you pick up are automatically inserted into them, provided they aren’t already holding you enlist the help of Deckard Cain, the need for Scrolls of Identify will be dramatically reduced, as he’ll be able to identify items en masse whenever you return to town. But you’ll want access to town portals throughout the smart about what you pick upYou’ll come across a lot of loot as you play, and not all of it is necessarily worth picking up. While you can sell anything back in town, repeatedly returning can quickly become tedious and will cost you a small amount in the form of a Scroll of Town Portal. As such, your time is better spent only picking up more valuable items. Those that are specific to a class–wands, sacred globes, scepters, barbarian helmets, and so on–are a good bet, as are rings/amulets and items that provide a point to one of a class’s skills. Focus on nabbing these instead of bolts or other low-value items that take up a lot of space to maximize your earnings and reduce the number of trips back to town you need to epare to grindDiablo 2 doesn’t have an endgame like you’d expect from a modern game, and eventually you’ll likely spend a lot of time on boss runs, where you repeatedly square off against a boss to earn better items. But even before reaching that point, you may find yourself underpowered, so you’ll want to grind out XP (and hopefully earn some good items) by repeating certain sections of the game. Hire a mercenary for helpAs noted above, the Necromancer’s ability to summon allies is invaluable for keeping some of the heat off of you. Fortunately, everyone can enlist help even without diving into multiplayer. As you progress through the early Act 1 story, you’ll gain the ability to hire your first mercenary from Kashya (one of the NPCs in the Act 1 town, the Rogue Encampment). There are various types of mercenaries you’ll be able to hire as you progress through the game, beginning with the bow-wielding rogues of Act can only have one mercenary at a time, so you’ll want to make sure you choose one that complements your class. Pay attention to their skills when looking to hire one; a rogue with Cold Arrow (which slows enemies but deals less damage) might be less useful to you if you’re a Sorceress who’s already slowing down enemies or a Necromancer with summons who will divert enemies’ you have a mercenary, make sure to equip them with gear to increase their effectiveness. Also of note is that ethereal items, which can’t be repaired, are useful with mercenaries due to the fact that merc-equipped items don’t lose cketed items and Runewords are powerfulEven in the early going, you’ll begin acquiring gems that can be placed into items with sockets. These can be extremely beneficial, and socketed weapons in particular can provide you with a major damage boost. Even if the inherent attributes of an item aren’t great, bear in mind that a sufficient number of sockets can be transformative if you use them in the right ‘s where Runewords come in.
