Sneakerheads had reason to hate Nike’s SNKRS app even before the …

19-year-old Joe Hebert’s business has been booming. The sneaker reseller’s online store, West Coast Streetwear, has over 60, 000 followers on Instagram, and Hebert, also known as West Coast Joe, regularly makes six figures in a single month by selling on Nike’s SNKRS app. There’s only one problem: his side hustle cost his mother her job as an executive at Nike.
Ann Hebert, who served as a VP overseeing Nike’s North America business, resigned Monday after a Bloomberg profile of her son made it apparent he had been using her credit card to run West Coast Streetwear. Ann, who had been with Nike for over 25 years, allegedly didn’t violate company policy and even told Nike about her son’s business, the company said. The fiasco made waves in the sneaker community, but sneakerheads see it as the latest in a series of issues relating to the way Nike handles reselling.
Nike’s SNKRS app ratings, for example, are mixed. While most users have left five star reviews, a quick glance at the app’s most recent reviews yields plenty of one star ratings. Many of those ratings complain about bots on the app, the inability to bid on sneakers that sell out instantly, and app glitches.
“The convenience of the app is great, but you probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting a pair of well sought out sneakers, ” one user wrote. “It’s amount of bots that use this is insane! ”
“Unless you have a bot to complete a transaction in less than a millisecond, don’t even waste your time, ” another wrote.
Despite the negative reviews, app store ratings are going up.
The SNKRS app currently has a 4. 8 rating with 608, 000 reviews, a steady increase from the 423, 000 reviews it had last April, according to our data. The pandemic has been good for sneaker resellers. Joe Hebert told Bloomberg that his profits tripled when the stimulus checks landed in bank accounts. And Hebert is one of the reasons sneakerheads are so dissatisfied with the app.
For starters, Hebert’s business model involves gaming Nike’s system using bots and a group of fellow resellers who coordinate their efforts on Discord — common practices among the most successful resellers. Bots are used to target the hottest sneakers on the SNKRS app and buy them in high quantities, only to sell them for higher prices. When reseller groups buy hundreds of sought-after shoes in one go, the average consumer — presumably Nike’s target audience — misses out.
However, Hebert isn’t engaging in illegal activity. Nike intentionally makes it hard to buy some of its shoes, creating an engineered scarcity model first made famous by brands like Supreme. When a new shoe drops, the hype is fueled by the winners and losers on social media — those who secured a pair flaunt them. The ones who complain weren’t fast enough. And many of Nike’s drops are exclusive to SNKRS, further fueling the hype.
Many sneakerheads called out Hebert online, speculating that his mother’s ties with the company — which included overseeing the SNKRS app — helped him get a hold of exclusive products or information about upcoming drops. While there’s no evidence that Hebert received insider information, he’s already at a considerable advantage. With the use of bots, a network of resellers, and even a Eugene, Oregon warehouse, West Coast Joe isn’t likely to stop selling anytime soon.

Nike Says Bots Will Not Help Anyone Get Exclusive Access to SNKRS

Just last month, Nike revealed that the SNKRS app would be receiving an update for its Exclusive Access launch model coming this Summer 2021. The brand recently shared additional details that showed users how they can receive access on Nike’s most coveted drops outside of the regular launch dates.
The brand emphasized that its goal is still to provide its members with access to the most exclusive products. However, content engagement is a must in order to be notified of any upcoming drops. Users are encouraged to tune into SNKRS Live sessions as ways that will help them increase their chances of gaining exclusive access.
Nike also confirmed that bots will not do anything to help users get greater chances. Using a bot to set up multiple accounts or tap on buttons will in fact get the users blocked from launch access. It is to be acknowledged that it is not something new for Nike to give its members Exclusive Access. The brand reminds fans that those who are lucky enough to receive exclusive access still might not be able to purchase the shoe in their preferred size due to limited releases.
The Swoosh brand recently confirmed that Virgil Abloh‘s upcoming 50-sneaker Off-White x Dunk collection will exclusively drop through SNKRS.

Great app
This app is absolutely terrific! At first I was feeling dreaded on constantly trying to go to stores to get my Jordan’s just to find out that it’ll be sold out in my size anyway. When I came across this app I contemplated because I didn’t know if it was a scam or if it was actually legit. So I took the courage to order one of my Jordan’s which were the air Jordan retro 9’s that were all black. I went to my local shoe store and they were sold out at exactly 9 am so when I ordered it off the app I didn’t know if it was gonna be sold out or not, but comes to find out it wasn’t! They had my exact size and all I needed to do was create an account with my touch id passcode and just like that I got them. A few hours later it emailed me saying my order has been received and 2 days later emailed me again saying it has been shipped. About 3-4 days after I got my shoes in the mail! I just ordered another pair which was the Homage To Home retro 1’s and the same thing successfully happened. I absolutely LOVEEEEE this app and do not regret getting it, and will continue using it for here on out. 🙂
I recently tried to purchase a new pair of 1’s that came out. I logged on just in time my payment info was already in all I had to do was click the purchase button come 10 o’clock and I did just that. It told me my order was pending and that they’ll let me know if I got them or not. 2 seconds later I got a notification that I “got em” and they sent me a verification email with my shipping details. They gave me an arrival date of May 29th and now today I received an email saying my order was “cancelled”. Confused, I called nike (waited 45 minutes so I assumed this happened to multiple people) and they basically said the reason my order is cancelled is because they have no more in stock. So my whole point is don’t send people verification that they “got” the shoe cause that makes it seem like you guys have an absolute pair reserved for me when you didn’t. When you purchase shoes on snkrs and they send you verification saying you “got” the shoe it actually IS FALSE they have no reserved pair for you once they check your order in which it was received in and they have no more in stock they just cancel the order. Very silly. Don’t get me wrong I believe in “first come first serve” but if I wasn’t one of the first and don’t actually have a pair reserved for me dont send me verification saying I got them then cancel my order 5 days before the day you guys TOLD me they would arrive. Makes no sense to me.
Bots killed the Game
I am a huge sneaker fanatic since a child and I remember whenever a sneaker dropped you could walk right into the store a week later and still be able to cop some heat for retail. Now a days we have a bunch of kids using bots to buy out all of the stock just to mark that sneaker up an extra $100 to $200+ above retail which is ridiculous. I haven’t won one draw yet and I’ve always been on time and ready to go to purchase whatever sneaker is available at the time and no success. Your team need to do a better job at focusing on taking out these bots so we can actually have a fighting chance to purchase a sneaker we actually want, sneakers we are actually gonna wear and not resell. This is the reason why I’ve haven’t bought a new pair of kicks in the past 2 years because I don’t wanna pay $500 for sneaker that sold retail for less than $200 that is stupid to do especially in these times. I have 2 young boys that once the time comes they are gonna wanna purchase shoes just like their daddy but I wouldn’t be able to afford buying my 2 boys the latest heat because I would have to pay resell cost or get extremely lucky which that’s just not fair. Fix this and maybe I’ll give this app 5 stars but until then you will continue to get negative reviews from not only me but other unhappy fans of this product. P. S. you have a lot of unhappy fans. (FIX THE APP/ STOP THE BOTS)
