A PSA to people who anonymously chat with strangers on the internet: Not all spaces are so private. According to security researcher Indrajeet Bhuyan, Omegle — a free online chat site where strangers are randomly paired for one-on-one chat sessions — is “not as anonymous as it claims. ” Each chat log is saved in Omegle’s server after a user exits a conversation, Bhuyan said in an email. “After a user disconnects his chat, Omegle saves the entire chat log in their server permanently, ” Bhuyan said. Omegle’s privacy policy states that “Chat messages are screened by an automated system for spam. In general, messages are not stored, but messages which are flagged as suspicious may be stored indefinitely, and select messages may be read by a human being to improve Omegle’s anti-spam software, or for other quality control purposes. ” Omegle goes on to note that when you start a chat, the timestamp, IP address, ID cookie “and similar information for you and your chat partner” are recorded and may be used to track spammers, hackers and other potential cyberspace wrongdoers as well as for “law enforcement purposes” or to compile statistical data. All of this data is “typically” stored for about 120 days. An Omegle issue here isn’t that Omegle is claiming that it doesn’t record the chats on its platform — it states right in its privacy policy that it is collecting a whole lot of information about its users and, based on the “typically” thrown in there, can essentially hold onto all of this data for as long as it pleases. The issue is that Omegle is marketed as a space of willful anonymity, where users can develop online companionship with strangers — and unless you read through its privacy policy, you are likely ignorant to the fact that your chat is being recorded from the start. “People on Omegle often think their chats are private and chats get deleted once they disconnect from the conversation, ” Bhuyan said. “Due to this false sense of security, people often share sensitive information on it. ” To start a chat is nearly instantaneous, and unless a user reads through the privacy policy page ahead of a chat, there’s no indication that your information is stored. And all of this sensitive information is susceptible to hackers, meaning these private conversations could end up in the wrong hands and become very public. As the Hacker News reported, these recorded conversations require “little knowledge of hacking” to access, citing Bhuyan’s python script, Omegle-Chat-Hack, as evidence that someone outside of Omegle can download user’s conversations. An Omegle spokesperson said in an email that they think Bhuyan’s hack was feasible by guessing the URL of a chatlog — a random sequence of letters and numbers — a user has saved. “In practice, that is mostly a concern for chatlogs that users saved years ago, which had shorter URLs that were easier to guess, ” they said. “URLs generated more recently should be much harder to guess, but just to be on the safe side, I’ve made newly-generated URLs even longer in response to this. “They believe that those at risk are likely just users who saved their chatlogs and those saved with URLs “that are short enough to be guessable, ” but reiterated that Omegle has made newly-generated URLs that are even longer “to be on the safe side with this. “August 19, 2016, 3:01 p. m. : This story has been updated.

Omegle, the Popular ‘Chat with Strangers’ Service Leaks Your Dirty …

Ever since the creation of online chat rooms and then social networking, people have changed the way they interact with their friends and associates.
However, when it comes to anonymous chatting services, you don’t even know what kinds of individuals you are dealing with.
Sharing identifiable information about yourself with them could put you at risk of becoming a victim of stalking, harassment, identity theft, webcam blackmail, and even phishing scams.
Have you heard of Omegle? The popular, free online anonymous chat service that allows you to chat with random strangers, without any registration. The service randomly pairs you in one-on-one chat window where you can chat anonymously over text or webcam.
But, are your chats actually Anonymous?
No, all your chats are recorded and saved by the service. So, if you have shared your personal details such as your name, phone number, or email address, with anyone over the service, you are no more anonymous.
Even the website describes its service as, “When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random and let you talk one-on-one. To help you stay safe, chats are anonymous unless you tell someone who you are (not suggested! ), and you can stop a chat at any time. ”
And here comes the worst part:
The recorded online conversations are saved in such a way that anyone with a little knowledge of hacking can pilfer them, revealing your personal information along with those dirty chats that could be used to harass or blackmail you.
Indrajeet Bhuyan (@Indrajeet_b), a young Indian bug hunter, has shown The Hacker News that how Omegle is saving screenshots of every ‘so-called’ anonymous chat session at a specific location on their web server, which could be downloaded by anyone with little knowledge of website structure.
Bhuyan wrote a simple python script, Omegle-Chat-Hack, that automatically downloads the saved screenshots from the website.
As a proof-of-concept, he also published some of those screenshots, showing how easily people, especially teenagers, share their personal details and contact info with strangers on a service, where they are supposed to stay anonymous.
“People on Omegle often think their chats are private and automatically get deleted once they disconnect from the conversation, ” Bhuyan told me. “Due to this false sense of security, people often share their sensitive information on the service. Omegle-Chat-Hack is a tool that demonstrates how insecure these online chat services are and how one can read your private messages sent over the service. ”
So, you should be careful with what identifiable information you are sharing over such online service while chatting with strangers. The more personal information you share, the more chances there are for others to misuse your information.
Frankly, you should take your online privacy very seriously.

What is Omegle?
Omegle, a video-chatting website that pairs random users identified as ‘You’ and ‘Stranger’ to chat online via ‘Text’, ‘Video’ or both. A user can also choose to add their interests, and Omegle will try to pair a user with someone who has similar interests. If not, you could meet anyone. Chats are anonymous unless the user states who they are, it’s free and no account sign up is required.
There appear to be many associated apps such as ‘Chat for Omegle’, ‘Free Omegle Chat’, ‘Omeglers’, but there is no longer an official Omegle app. All sites and apps appear to share the same features and purpose, but only some claim to be affiliated to Omegle and others state that they are not affiliated.
Parents/carers should check if their kids have got these variations of these apps installed on their phones.
Who uses Omegle?
Omegle has a minimum age rating of 13 years or older with parental permission for under 18s. Omegle is particularly popular in the US, UK, India, and Mexico. It is also extremely popular among children and young people (as young as 7) as a lot of younger influencers come to Omegle from TikTok then share their experiences on TikTok creating a huge surge to the platform. The #omegle hashtag has approximately 5 billion views on TikTok.
Is Omegle safe?
Risk of sharing or viewing inappropriate content
Omegle does not appear to have robust moderation nor is there a registration or age verification making them a potential target for online predators. Its site states “predators have been known to use Omegle, so please be careful. ”
Children and young people may be asked by strangers to share their name, age, and location. So, it’s also important to talk to your child about sharing personal information online with strangers – some guidance is linked below.
A recent BBC investigation revealed sexually explicit videos and live streams (featuring minors as young as 7 or 8) which spread across the site during the Covid-19 pandemic. BBC has since alerted the relevant authorities.
According to the BBC’s investigation, schools, police forces, and governments have issued warnings about Omegle in the UK, US, France, Norway, Canada, and Australia.
There were also investigations into online child abuse on Omegle along with reports of racism, extremist views, scams, and cyberbullying.
Lack of moderation on video chat
The video chat has an adult, moderated and unmoderated option that can be easily accessible by underage users. Clicking the button, the users will be directly on live video and text chat, without warning which unfortunately allows for children to be easily exposed to potential risks in a matter of seconds. Additionally, the video chat opens up the possibility for footage to be recorded and distributed without the user’s consent.
Types of chat options:
Adult – anyone can access this which contains heavily explicit content. The user only needs to confirm by clicking a button then they’re redirected to an external adult pornography site
Moderated chat – according to Omegle’s Disclaimer they moderate chats and say “… moderation is not perfect. You may still encounter people who misbehave. ” However, they do not state how it does this effectively or frequently
Unmoderated chat – this option comes with a warning box advising the user they need to be 18+ but an underage user can easily click ‘OK’ and they are allowed in. Users are highly likely to encounter risks such as online grooming, sexually explicit and violent content
Anonymous text chat
The text chat has a ‘spy’ function where users can either be the ‘spy’ and log on as a hidden 3rd party in a text chat between two people.
The ‘spy’ can then ask the other two users to discuss a particular topic/question and view their replies. Alternatively, a user can be the participant and discuss the question with another user.
A ‘spy’ can exit without ending the chat between the other two users.
Does Omegle have any parental controls?
Although there are prompts to encourage the safe use of the platform, there are no parental control settings on the app.
According to Omegle, they monitor conversations, but despite stating ‘video is monitored, keep it clean’, children and young people visiting this section are likely to encounter numerous other users engaging in sexually explicit chat and activity putting them at risk.
There are no instructions on how a user can report other users or content, even though Omegle’s Disclaimer advises that users can. There is also no block or mute feature either nor is there a robust enough system of monitoring or filtering video/text chats, so it’s important to enable parental controls on their phone and/or your home broadband.
In addition to the potential online risks, parents should also be aware of the danger of these conversations moving from online to offline and potential meetups.
It’s important to understand that Omegle connects kids with strangers of any age, so we would advise parents to consider restricting the use of the platform for children under 18.
Ways of keeping children safe online
